Microsoft Office 2003 has a speech recognition program which has proved very useful at times. I am not sure whether any of the later versions of office have this but im 90% sure they will.

Robustness in Automatic Speech Recognition $300.07 The domain of speech processing has come to the point where researchers and engineers are concerned with how speech technology can be applied to new products, and how this technology will transform our future. One important problem is to improve robustness of speech processing under adverse conditions, which is the subject of this book. Robust speech processing is a relatively new area which became a concern as technology started moving from laboratory to field applications. A method or an algorithm is robust if it can deal with a broad range of applications and adapt to unknown conditions. Robustness in Automatic Speech Recognition addresses all of the fundamental problems and issues in the area. The book is divided into three parts. The first provides the background necessary for understanding the rest of the material. It also emphasizes the problems of speech production and perception in noise along with popular techniques used in speech analysis and automatic speech recognition. Part Two discusses the problems relevant to robustness in automatic speech recognition and speech-based applications. It emphasizes intra- and inter-speaker variability as well as automatic speech recognition of Lombard, noisy and channel distorted speech. Finally, the third part covers recent advances in the field of robust automatic speech recognition. Audience: An invaluable reference. May be used as a text for advanced courses on the subject. |

How to start Speech Recognition on Vista?
So... Just to clarify it before someone tells me to "Go into the different files in the folder"... Here is what it's like http://www.download.eeextra.net/speech.jpg
So... There aren't any files to go to.. The link links to http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/windowsvista/speech.aspx
How can I open Speech Recognition? This isn't a screen shot from my computer, I found it on the web; but still it's the same as in my computer exept another language. It's taken in Control Panel > speech recognition options. Same folder as when you search 'speech'
How can I open it?
I said that I cannot access the speech recognition options!
If you haven't already set up speech recognition, do so now. Go through the tutorial and then continue to step 2.
Say: "Start listening. Open Notepad. Maximize that." If it doesn't understand you, don't waste time repeating yourself, and do it manually.
Make random noises like laughing (lots of laughing- it should be the majority of the noise you make anyway), moaning, "ppppbbbhhhhhhtttt"-ing, burping, and saying random words (only occasionally- swear words work well for this) into the microphone.
Every so often give it some time to catch up. Make sure it is done thinking by saying something simple like "butter", and if it comes up immediately, then continue. If it isn't then wait- if you don't your computer and/or speech recognition may crash, regardless of how great your computer is.
When you have enough to amuse yourself (maybe one or two paragraphs), say "stop listening" and close speech recognition. Save the tect file in notepad, something like "random shiz".
Open sound recorder and start recording- *read back* the text that speech recognition has left you, and laugh if you have to. When you've gotten to the end, stop recording and save that file with the same name as the text (in case you do many) with "read" on the end. Example, "random shiz read".
Listen to yourself reading the random, epic story. If any of it makes a lick of sense, you've failed. Try again. If you laugh because it makes no sense what so ever and yet is epic and amazingly fail, you've won. Go make cookies and quote your favorite "sentence" for the rest of the day. YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN to people who ask what the heck you're talking about, or you'll look... really weird.
Repeat if you want.
